I'm in love with Elements, just sayin'. The only place better just might be Hand and Stone )From all I've heard, I've not been any of their studios). Slightly nerve wracking because hands on. But they asked good questions and I aced the part where they asked about which muscle groups to target if a client came in with certain complaints. I think it went really well. :)

Thus far, they are the most thurrowgh place I have interviewed with, and the cleanest. I like that about them, even if it meant I was a bit nervous because also the first to do a hands-on portion.

Now to wait and see...

Best wishes! One of my former instructors runs an Elements branch up in Greenlake, or did last I checked in with him. And yes, I've heard good things about Hand & Stone also. Some friends of mine have worked there and liked it a lot.

Equipment is probably not too much of a problem... most massage schools have connections to other students or graduates who are selling used tables and such. Though I'm surprised you don't have a table if you're in school; is that not a part of the package at yours? We got a table as part of our tuition, because it was necessary for hands-on homework all year, and it's still the one I use in my practice four years later. I picked up things like the massage chair and the Thai mat secondhand, later, from other therapists.

The concern I'd have with you starting your own practice is that the marketing is incredibly hard, and most of us therapists are not natural marketers! If you are, I admire you for it -- I'm certainly not, and I'm struggling through getting my new practice started up after we moved.

OTOH, I doubt the references thing will be much of a problem... I was rarely even asked for mine. If they let you get to the stage of doing a hands-on at all, they have already generally decided that everything besides the hands-on is okay, and they'll take you if you can back up your words with your work.

That doesn't mean it's always easy -- sometimes they have some pretty high standards for the hands-on, and sometimes you're competing with a few other therapists, so even if you're good, they only have one slot and somebody else is better. But it does mean that your references, if they aren't outright bad, shouldn't factor into it much.
